PECOS KIVA

Pecos National Historical Park, New Mexico

Image of kiva interior including deflector, fire pit and ventilator shaft under entrance light.  Puebloan peoples believed that kivas represent a place between the underworld and world above.  Just out of the scene is the sipapu, a hole in the floor symbolizing a point of access for human emergence and access to the spirits below.
